Managing Holiday Debt

The best way to manage holiday debt is to start way before Christmas. If you like to spend a lot for Christmas and pay for it for the next year, it could catch up to you quickly. Racking up big credit card bills and buying things with borrowed money isn’t a good idea. Even if the store offers no interest until next year, they know that most people will not pay off the bill before they owe more than they bargained for.

Keeping your credit cards at a manageable limit is important no matter what season it is. If you can pay it off this month, then there won’t be any interest, period.

The biggest thing to remember is that people don’t need as much as we think they need. Homemade or creative gifts go far. Finding the perfect treasure at a thrift store can save lots of money and show that you understand their personality as well. Don’t underestimate the power of the pen, too. Writing a sweet letter expressing your feelings may be priceless in their eyes.

Don’t forget the true meaning of Christmas. The baby Jesus was born to save mankind from sin. We give gifts to remember the greatest gift of all. Let’s not get so wrapped up in the big, expensive things that we forget the true meaning of Christmas.
